Research Director, ARC Research Hub for Medicinal Agriculture
Instrumental in the establishment of the $24+ million Australian-first Research Hub for Medicinal Agriculture, Prof. Jim Whelan’s role as Research Director oversees the initiative’s aim to transformation the production of high quality, plant derived therapeutics into an integrated, Australia-wide industry that spans primary producers and manufacturers.
Prof. Whelan also holds roles as Research Director for the La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food, at La Trobe University and Chief Investigator for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology.
Prof. Whelan is world-leading for his research on plant mitochondria. His lab has 25 years of expertise in the field of mitochondrial function and mitochondrial signalling of plant’s energy and stress status, evidenced by close to 250 papers in high-impact journals (Plant Cell, Plant Physiology, The Plant Journal). In 2019, he was elected as a Fellow to the Australian Academy of Science.
